Geert Hofstede claims that cultural differences are manifested in various ways and he has identified four manifestations of culture that can be used to describe and analyse any culture. On the basis of these manifestations he has created an onion diagram consisting of In Hofstede’s opinion, the underlying values govern people’s behaviour and actions, and he defines them as tendencies to prefer certain things to others. The values of a culture for instance deal with what is good or evil, abnormal or normal, unnatural or natural and ugly or beautiful. The onion model can be compared with the iceberg model: the part that is under the waterline is represented by the inner layer of the onion. It is just another model to convey the message that values are not obvious and require a deeper understanding of a specific culture.
